People say art and money don’t mix, but our ability to create art, support our communities, and fulfill our personal passions requires an inclusive economy. Silence around money perpetuates a status quo that is decidedly exclusionary. Dyalekt will frame how historical policies and events have led to current racial wealth inequality, facilitating a discussion on how art, media, and propaganda have perpetuated this system; how commonly accepted wealth-building tools such as higher education, homeownership, and entrepreneurship reinforce economic inequality; how to break away from the “bootstraps” narrative that keeps many people from questioning systematic economic oppression; how to unpack your own financial and family history in the context of this divide; and how to approach your finances to create stability, freedom, and generational wealth using the existing systems.
